7 Sneaky Foods That Sound Healthy but Actually Aren’t

The health food industry is a big money maker for many companies.

With just a quick re-wording and redesign of labels, they can trick consumers into thinking that these products are healthy choices. The truth is, these foods are sneaky and knowing what to look for means you won’t be fooled.

The truth is, these foods are sneaky and knowing what to look for means you won’t be fooled.

Here are 7 foods that sound healthy but actually aren’t.

Buyer beware!

  1. Multi-grain bread

So you’ve made the switch from white bread, but choosing multi-grain bread isn’t as healthy as you think. What you want to look for is bread that says it is 100% whole wheat or 100% whole grain. Also, look out for high fructose corn syrup. There are plenty of healthy whole grain bread options. Just read the labels!

  1. Bottled green tea

Green tea is revered in Asia for its health benefits. Freshly brewed, it is an outstanding source of antioxidants. But in bottled form, it is filled with sweeteners that undo all the good of drinking green tea. Keep it natural!

  1. Prepared salad

A salad is a wonderfully healthy choice, but when you choose prepared salads out of convenience, you fall victim to high-calorie dressings and other ingredients that can keep them from being a low-cal and healthy option.

  1. Energy bars

Most energy bars out there are filled with sugar. If you want a high protein bar that will fill you up and keep you going, consider making them yourself. It’s easy to do and actually tastes better. Plus, you’ll know how to pronounce all the ingredients.

  1. Trail mix

If you’re trying to lose weight, trail mix is a poor choice. While the ingredients are mostly good for you, if you gobble down too much, you’ll be eating too many calories. Try eating it just before your workouts to make the most of the protein powder.

  1. Bottled salad dressings

Bottled salad dressings are very convenient, but they’re not very healthy. Even the vinaigrettes and light dressings are filled with fat and calories. Want a tasty salad dressing that’s good for you too?

Make it yourself. It takes just minutes and you’ll never go back to bottled again.

  1. Smoothies

On your lunch break, you run by that smoothie place near your office. But if you’re having it made with milk or lots of pre-packaged fruit juices, you’re just turning something that should be healthy into a very unhealthy option.

If you like smoothies, make them yourself at home. They will be healthier when you make them from bases with almond milk or filtered water. And using fresh juices will make them more nutritious.

Don’t forget to say no to those pre-canned smoothies at the supermarket too. Just take a look at the sugar content on the label if you need more convincing.

Are you eating things that you thought were healthy but aren’t? It’s never too late to start being more aware of what you’re fueling your body with and making a change for the better.
