Bar Takito: Taking Tacos to Another Level
We all have one food that you could eat all the time if you could. If you are like me, you think Taco Tuesdays should be celebrated every day of the week. I take pride in being a certified taco enthusiast. When the familiar thought of “I want tacos” popped in my head, the next natural thought was to head to Bar Takito.
Takito Kitchen and Bar Takito take traditional Mexican dishes and mixes them with a modern flair. Be prepared to experience unexpected flavors infused with local and fresh ingredients that delight the senses.
We love restaurants that show high levels of hospitality. So I was delighted when owner Mario Ponce came over to my table to chop it up with me.
Take a look at our conversation about the present and future of Takito:
Where did the concept of Takito come from?
The word Takito should be spelled Taqito. The reason I didn’t spell it that way is because if I had, I think people would’ve expected sombreros, the virgin mary in the corner, and mariachi music playing. I certainly have nothing against that segment of the industry, but it’s a really crowded sandbox.
I read a book a few years back called Blue Ocean, about how do you compete and differentiate in today’s economy. Being of Mexican heritage I wanted to create a Mexican concept but I didn’t want it to feel Mexican I wanted it to feel contemporary and urban.
Takito Kitchen is an urban taco joint. And Bar Takito is a step above that.
The assortment of flavors are wonderful!
Thank you! Our chef, who is amazing, says , “Mario the problem I’m having with Mexican food is it puts me in a headlock. We can have more fun if you let us do Latin American.” We can feature Mexico, but we can also dive into Peru, we can dive into Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Dominican and so many other cool places. This is where our flavors come through.
Are you going to open additional locations?
We are negotiating as we speak. It’s going to be called Takito Street. This will be a Mexican restaurant done our way. I want to transport you. I want you to feel like I dropped you off in the middle of Mexico city, with check averages that are a lot lower. It’s great cocktails, really good Mexican street food, but elevated. I think you’ll like it!
I know we will.
My conversation with Mario was extremely enlightening.
Now it’s time for you to have a similar experience. If you are looking for out of this world drinks, cool background music, and amazing latin cuisine, make a Takito reservation your next reservation!
