The Kitchen is the Restaurant at Chicago’s Roister
At Roister, customers are given a full eating experience from the kitchen to the table.
Chicago has so many restaurants to select from, it can sometimes be overwhelming. There have been instances where it has literally taken Telie and I an hour to choose a place to dine for lunch or dinner. On a Thursday afternoon recently, we were charged with finding a place to have lunch during a time crunch. While cruising the meatpacking area of the city, we stumbled upon Roister.
Roister (click HERE) is a New American eatery that is sleek and posh, with an understated urban feel. The grey tones of the design are warm, yet inviting, and the music wafting inside is part hip hop, part classic soul, and all the way awesome. This is not your parents’ restaurant.
The layout of Roister is fantastic. It boasts open spaces that allow a bird’s eye view into the kitchen. In fact, the kitchen is a part of the layout, breaking the tradition of having it tucked behind closed doors.
The staff is friendly and eager to meet your every need. Attentive and knowledgeable about the food and how it is prepared, we felt comfortable knowing that our server could answer all of our questions easily.
The lunch menu was rather limited, but we both zeroed in on the Fried Chicken Sandwich, that is basic in principle, but complex when it comes to taste. It is sometimes the most simplest of treats that can be the best tasting.
We selected two appetizers to nosh on, the first being Aged Cheddar Rillettes made with cauliflower truffle, mixed in a heavenly slab of aged cheddar on toast. When I say this is one of the best appetizers I have ever had! The ingredients are simple, but the flavor combination heightened all of my senses. I am still thinking about this dish over a week later.
The second starter we devoured was Biscuits and Gravy. Again, this is not an old school approach to a family favorite. The biscuit was more of a cornbread and the gravy was more of a sauce. We enjoyed it thoroughly.
The main dish was stellar! The fried chicken in our Fried Chicken Sandwich was crispy, well seasoned, and worthy of an honorable mention. Juicy and served with Sunchoke Hot Sauce and Chamomile Mayo, grandmother would approve.
